DAVE NIEHAUS

“VOICE OF THE MARINERS”

2004 BROADCASTER OF THE YEAR

Olympia, Washington.  The Washington State Association of Broadcasters has named Dave Niehaus, the Voice of the Seattle Mariners, as its 2004 Broadcaster of the Year.

Dave has been the Voice of the Mariners since the franchise began in 1977.  From 1969 to 1976, he teamed with Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale to call the action for the California Angels.

In 1997, Niehaus was honored by the Washington State House of Representatives for his "contributions to the quality of life in the Pacific Northwest."  His contemporaries in the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association elected him Sportscaster of the Year for the state of Washington in 1995, 1996 and 1999.  During the 2000 season, Dave was inducted into the Mariners’ Hall of Fame.

His expressions like "My Oh My" and "It will fly away" are famous throughout the Northwest.

Dave was born and raised in Princeton, Indiana, and is a graduate of Indiana University.  He resides in Bellevue with wife Marilyn. They have three children: Andy, Matt and Greta, and two grandchildren, Zach and Steve.

The Washington State Association of Broadcasters Board of Directors presents the Broadcaster annually to a broadcaster who has made a significant and lasting contribution to Washington broadcasting by virtue of a singular achievement or continuing service on behalf of the industry.
