| 2. Who can be a NO KIDDING! member?
If someone who has never had kids has a partner who has kids (of any
age), the
non-parent can join NO KIDDING!, while their partner (the one with kids) can
come as their guest. The partner with kids cannot come without the member, and must pay a function fee, just like all other guests and
non-members. The childburdened partner can attend policy meetings, and will
have a voice, but no vote.
Members in the Vancouver-area chapter (Chapter One) range in age from 20s to 70s, with most being in their 30s and 40s. Couples, singles, men, and women are usually nearly equally represented. Most members of NO KIDDING! have thought long and hard about parenthood and many have concluded (for various reasons) that it really wasn't right for them, while some are still in the decision-making process. Still others will probably have children at sometime in the future, but aren't ready just yet (even though all of their other friends are having theirs now and are urging them to catch up), and some wanted to have kids but were unable to. They have all joined NO KIDDING! to be able to socialize with other adults who can be spontaneous, who can chat on the phone without interruptions, and who won't alienate them by talking about kids all the time. Some NO KIDDING! members adore children, some like children, some are neutral toward children, some dislike children, and some can't stand children. You will probably meet people from both extremes, and many from in between, at NO KIDDING! activities.
