ShakuhachiThe shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown bamboo flute that is used in Zen meditation and Koto ensembles. The kind I make are called Hochiku which means the bamboo is left as natural as possible, without internal shaping, plastering, and lacquering. This kind of shakuhachi is often chosen by those wishing to use it for meditation rather than concert performance. It has a pentatonic scale like the Native American flute, though it requires practice to produce a tone. Available made from either bamboo root end or from a non-root end. The heavy root end shakuhachi were first made by dispossessed samurai who were forbidden swords, and needed something they could use as a club. It is available in the following keys: D - $75 C - $80 Bb - $85 G - $90 F - $95 E - $100 - USD. (The G, F, and E shakuhachi require longish fingers). Add 30$ to the above prices for an instrument using a bamboo root end. If you have any questions about this flute please Contact me.
