CD Liner Notes:

The marimba speaks a language both Old and New World whose sound has been nurtured in the fertile landscape of Central and South America.  Its eloquence and deep resonance disguise an instrument of great versatility, power, and dynamic range.  The latter part of the twentieth century has witnessed a virtual revolution in the development of this mallet percussion instrument, its soft tone has been transformed with innovative and sophisticated contrapuntal techniques that have made possible a repertoire inconceivable just a few generations ago.  Marimba players are now relishing the fruits of those new techniques and reinterpreting classic compositions as well as developing a vibrant new and progressive repertoire.
This recording introduces two outstanding performers whose endless quest for deeply rooted lyricism and emotional breadth draws them to compositions capable of conveying both these streams while confirming the marimba as an ideal vehicle for expressive music.
On this debut recording, marimbists Nicholas Coulter and Graham Hargrove will delight, soothe and entice your musical appetites with arrangements of well-known compositions by Tarrega, Albeniz, Piazzolla, Sarasate, Lauro and Biebl. Enjoy.
