Focus on Old-Fashioned Play I was inspired watching the kids at the Festival, especially with the three toys I mentioned above. Many children were happily playing with these toys for over an hour, and almost all (if not all) the children who visited played with at least one of them. Many families returned several times because their kids wanted to play with the same toy again. So what do they have in common that captivated everyone like that? And how are they different from the toys relegated to the bottom of toy boxes everywhere, that looked so enticing at the store but had no staying power once the package was open? It's hard not to notice that these three Discovery Toys are manual. Hammer a ball to watch it roll and fall. Build a track to race your marbles through. Use a tool to take apart your airplane and put it back together. These toys are also simple. Sure, putting together a Marbleworks track can be a challenge. But there's no wires, no 'magic' that kids can neither see nor understand. When something happens, it's because the child makes it happen. Imagine the learning that's taking place. Imagine the sense of accomplishment they feel. It's no wonder kids find these toys more satisfying than ones where the toy does all the playing for them. As parents, we should be grateful for that. We should nurture it. |
