NALUG Layout for Supertrain 2001

Model Train Show - Calgary, Alberta, Canada

Show Dates: Feb 17 - Feb 18, 2001
The custom LEGO creations in the NALUG layout were built by NALUG members:
James Brown, Steve Chapple, Chris Grey,
John Koob, Michel Magnan, and Kevin Maynes.
James Powell, and David "Zonker" Harris loaned track and models.
All LEGO parts in this layout are privately owned.
The LEGO Company had generously donated about 30000 parts for
the children's play area, which was located adjacent to the
NALUG layout. Photography and page design by John Koob.
Empty Tables The empty tables when John arrived
before setup of the layout began. A bit
overwhelming. Here is a closer shot.
Setup NALUG people hard at work with the frantic
setup. It is about 5:00pm at this point and we
only have until 10:00pm. A few minutes later,
James and Lara were seen setting up some
buildings.
Bin of Track James Powell's bin of straights was eventually
emptied as John set up all of the track.
Some of these preassembled track segments were
already removed and placed on the tables in the
background.
Bin of Track Kalen, daughter of the Browns, rests in the
middle of chaos near the uncompleted main line.
Setup John built the NALUG sign out of red, white, and
green basic Lego bricks. To simplify transport,
it splits in the middle. Kudos to Eric Harshbarger,
of course.
Center Center section of the layout with the elevator,
high speed line, and the highway. The
two right tracks belong to the large
loop and the two left tracks are part
of the smaller loop between the town
and the port.
Mainline The blue Via train approaches on the
high speed mainline, which intrigues a
curious onlooker. The town and elevator are
visible in the background.
Mainline Track winds past the mountain and
off into the distance. Here is another view.
Mainline Track near the town. The highway is located
to the right.
Layout Citizens of Calgary inspecting our layout.
Steve's bridge was a popular feature.
Layout This view includes Adam in the white shirt,
the mountain, our sign, and the yard.
Layout Another view of the layout that includes
the entire length of the high speed line.
Note the concrete-filled red Lego buckets holding
the rope barrier posts--this is a result of
Michel's inventiveness and everyone's hard work.
Layout The same side of the layout as above, but
this shot was taken from the other end
at the end of the first day.
Layout Another view of the layout with the town and
Metroliner in the foreground. Four NALUG members
can be seen chatting on the right.
Play Area Children's Play Area that we set up beside
our layout. About 10000 pieces are on each table
in the blue tubs. It was not as tidy after the invasion
Play Area Crowd Children's Play Area full of happy youngsters.
Fortunately, it was supervised by show volunteers.
At the end of the first day, it looked like this.
Town The NALUG town. Most buildings
were built by James, and some by Chris and John.
House One of James' excellent houses.
Station James' train station at the far edge of town.
Police John's police station is a modified version of set 6386.
There is a parking lot at the rear.
Park James Jessiman Memorial Park. This park occupies
a full block in the center of town. As with
everthing else, it is built entirely out of Lego.
Park Closeup of the James Jessiman Memorial Park.
Near this location is the water tower.
Warehouse John's warehouse with attached office.
Mr. D. Z. Harris donated a few garage door panels;
here you can see the open center bay door.
Warehouse Warehouse office with office workers inside.
School Old brick school with children.
James is a prolific builder.
Slum Clapboard house with an old man and biker.
Who built that tree?
Warehouse Downtown at night.
Elevator Michel's grain elevator that was mechanized by John.
Small grey buckets moving up the conveyor belt in
the center seem to fascinate the crowd.
Elevator The grain elevator with the hinged wall closed.
Elevator Elevator and trains. Some of Michel's hoppers and
Zonker's cars were seen near the elevator.
Mountain Mountain exterior that used about 15000 bricks.
Two tracks pass by the mountain and head to infinity.
The mountain was built in sections.
Mountain James' Mountain interior. The two tunnels
allow clearance for 8-wides, which
complicates the support structure.
Mountain Tunnel entrances on the side of the mountain close
to the yard.
Yard Three versions of a CP engine.
Yard The large engine is known as "Big Red".
Yard Rolling stock.
Yard Blue Via train with Metroliner cars. Here is the
same train returning several minutes later.
Yard Some of Kevin's amazing rolling stock.
Yard Big Red emerges from the tunnel. Here it is again.
Yard Kevin's CP Rail caboose.
Yard The familiar club car that Michel sent along.
Yard Two trains underway on different lines. The one
on the right is ready for top speed.
Yard A fourteen-car passenger train.
Yard The NALUG ambassador car.
Yard The large yard
Yard Yard and an amused fan in the white shirt.
Yes, there is still some LEGO
in the bins under the tables.
Yard Closeup of the modular containers.
The view from above.
Yard A series of points. This configuration
was an efficient use of space.
Yard Several boxcars, tankers, and hoppers.
Yard Another view of the yard.
Yard Bird's eye view of the yard.
Everytime you look, it will appear different.
Yard A final look. While passing through the yard,
all trains were run at reduced speed. Steve used
electrical zoning to accomplish this.
Award The second place ribbons won by NALUG.
The blue ribbon is from the Greater Edmonton Train
Show (GETS) in 1999 The black and white one is
from Supertrain 2001 in Calgary.
Award NALUG members were honored to receive this
People's Choice Award.

Thanks to everyone!
