ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils are natural substances that are extracted from grasses, flowers, herbs, shrubs, trees, resins and spices, usually through a process called steam distillation. Oils can soothe, relax, rejuvenate, heal, energize or relieve pain, thereby affecting the body's physical, psychological and emotional levels. The use of oils in this manner is what is traditionally called aromatherapy.

USES: Essential oils can be inhaled through the nose and affect the brain via the olfactory system, or absorbed through the skin, sometimes reaching the bloodstream. Essential oils should never be applied directly to the skin and should always be diluted in a carrier oil such as jojoba, calendula or sweet almond. Once diluted, they can be used for local applications on body parts or for full body messages. They can also be added to bath water for soothing experience or used as compresses to alleviate chronic pain, such as backache or arthritis or acute pain such as sprains or headaches. Essential oils can be mixed with water and alcohol for refreshing room spray or vaporized in a burner to create an atmosphere or to eliminate unpleasant odors.

SAFETY TIPS:

* Essential oils should be stored in amber glass bottles away from direct sunlight and in a cool place. never store an essential oil in a plastic bottle.

* If you store oils in the refridgerator, place the bottles in air-tight containers so that the aroma does not permeate food.

* Certain oils may solidify in cold temperatures due to their high wax content. If this occurs, place the oil bottle in a bowl of hot water to liquefy before use.

* Most essential oils have a shelf life of two years, with the excepttion of pine and citrus oils which lose some of their potency after 6 months.

* The color of certain oils may change with time; this does not afect the potency of the oil.

* Avoid using essential oils directly ti the skin; dilute it first.

* Never use internally unless under the supervision and care of a specialist.

* Essential oils are not remommended for babies and small children and should always be stored out of the reach of children.

COMPRESSES:

* For chronic pain ( aching joints, backache, sore and tired muscles, earache, etc.), Prepare a hot compress by diluting 4 to 6 drops of oil in a large bowl of hot ( almost boiling) water. Dip a cotton sheet strip about 4 inches wide into liquid and wrap around, or apply to, affected area. Repeat when compress has cooled.

* For acute pain ( sprains, headache, etc.), prepare a cold compress by diluting 4 to 6 drops of oil in a large bowl filled with ice water. Dip a cotton strip about 4 inches wide into the liquid and wrap around, or apply to, affected area.

ROOM SPRAY: Dilute15 drops of oil into a half ounce of alcohol and add to a spray bottle filled with water. Use as an air freshener as often as desired.

VAPORIZATION:Add a few drops to a light bulb ring, fragrance burner or diffuser.

DILUTION RATE: The safest and most effectibe aromatherapy formulas are blended at a 2 1/2% concentraion rate. Although the number of drops will vary slightly with the density of the oil and the diameter of the dropper opening, these measurements are sufficiently accurate for the purpose of recipes on this website.
