In 1995, Bang Howdy assumed the stool behind the kit and The Mysterons finally performed their first ever live show. This was broadcast from the studios of CITR FM radio (University of British Columbia) and was recorded for the Live at UBC CD-R. The band then embarked on a sporadic series of live shows throughout the remainder of 1995 through 1998. Here, the band began to display their penchant for strange costumes and a somewhat confrontational approach to the stage. The live sets were unplanned with no set lists and songs pulled out of whatever hat happened to be around. 1996 saw the recording and release of the Hotdog, Pop 'n' Clown CD. By this time, the sound of the band had evolved into a noxious stew of worn out musical styles lifted from the corpse of popular western culture. What had originally been confined to terms such as "surf" had moved on to encompass an ever expanding range of styles from blues to jazz to lounge to funk to anything else that seemed putrid enough for these scavengers to consume. The live performances also took on a more sinister tone with "guests" appearing unexpectedly at various shows who would jump the stage and then quickly vanish into the confusion of the crowds. In 1998, burdened by his new found sobriety, Bang Howdy fell off his stool and The Mysterons were again left beatless. This did not stop the band from beginning work on their next set of recordings. That summer, the first sessions for what would become Wiki Wiki were recorded. In 1999, a session drummer was hired and most of the remaining work on this release was done by the end of the year. The group then fell dormant until the end of 2000 when the ever perverse Pancake Jack was recruited to lay down the law on drums. The group then began performing periodically again through 2001. In 2002, final post production was completed on Wiki Wiki which is currently available on CD-R and which can be downloaded from this site. Currently, the group is spending most of its time picking its teeth and waiting for invitations to play live or have their recordings released. 2006 Update: After a rather sparse few years of odd gigs from time to time, recording is now underway for the next full length release. Expected to be completed within the next year. For information on other projects related to The Mysterons, check out the Blood 'n' Tongue Archive. |
