The Matsutake (Pine) mushroom grows in a symbiotic relationship with the trees. Wrapping it's mycilliem (roots) around the roots of the host tree. The tree provides essential minerals to the mushroom and the mushroom provides other essential nutrients back to the tree.

The Pine mushroom can be found in most temperate forests in many parts of the world. It will grow amongst hemlock, douglas fir and spruce trees. It is believed to not grow symbiotically with Cedar or Decidious trees.
