How to Receive Meals on Wheels in Nanaimo
In most
cases people are
referred by members of the medical community. However, anyone can refer
a friend, family member or client to Meals on Wheels
- just call ...
250-753-1300
Please Note:
The only requirement needed to receive meals is that you must be
referred by another person.
- Meals cost $5.30 each
- Meals arrive hot and consist of a main course and dessert.
- Special diabetic diets and various preparations such as
cut, minced & mashed, and "no-added-salt" are available.
- Menus are based on a "four-week rotation". We
regret we cannot make
meal changes or substitutions to the menus.
- You are not required to have a meal every day.
- You may also receive meals for a short period of time,
rather than on on an ongoing basis if, for instance, you are recovering
from surgery or illness.
- Volunteer drivers deliver meals from Monday to Saturday. If
you require a Sunday meal we deliver two on Saturday and ask that you
reheat the 2nd meal on Sunday. We also deliver on all statutory
holidays.
- The Meals on Wheels Coordinator, Joanna Saunders (250-753-1300),
is available from 9:00 am to noon Monday to Friday; if for any reason
you need to cancel a meal, we ask that you call before noon of the day
the meal is to be delivered. We are unable to make meal changes after
12:00 noon.
- Your bill will be sent during the first week of each month,
with a stamped, addressed, return envelope. Please pay with a cheque or
money order for the amount on the bill and mail your payment in the
envelope provided. (Please include your Meals on Wheels Account Number
on your cheque)
Volunteers
are the backbone of Meals On Wheels in Nanaimo.
- What Drivers do
Drivers deliver meals, in their
own cars, once a week to about 9 recipients. It usually takes about an
hour to complete a route. Deliveries are made each day except Sunday.
- Hours
On the day they are to make deliveries
drivers meet their Day Captains at Kiwanis Lodge at 3:30 p.m. (The
residents of Kiwanis Lodge appreciate it when you say hello and stop to
talk with them)
- Routes
Drivers are assigned a route by their Day Captain; Day Captains try to
give drivers the same route each time they deliver meals.
- Volunteering
If you would like to volunteer as a Meals on Wheels
Driver, read over the Driver's Manual (below) and
then call us at 250-753-1300 or send an email to mownanaimo@shaw.ca
