General Information Maria Montessori became the first woman doctor in Italy in the late 1800's. Shortly thereafter, she began working with children who were considered uneducable. Having learned about the work of Edouard Séguin and Jean-Marc Gaspard Itard, she learned all she could from whatever she could find of their writings. She used and modified their methods and materials with these 'uneducable' children, who learned to read, write and do what all the children in schools were expected to do. When they passed the State exams, Dr. Montessori began wondering what was wrong with education at the time that so-called uneducable children could pass the exams as well as the school children. Unable to begin working with school children, she agreed to be in charge of the care and instruction of preschool children in a slum building in Rome. Beginning with only her basic philosophy and certain activities, she discovered a great deal about children, how they learn, how they develop, and much more, which all became the beginning of the Montessori Method. |
In our first schools the children used to enter when three years old. No one could teach them because they were not receptive; yet they offered us amazing revelations of the greatness of the human soul. "The Absorbent Mind"by Maria Montessori |
