The Materials The materials play an important role in the Montessori environment. Maria Montessori wrote so much on the benefits and the development of the children with the materials, that many get the mistaken idea that the materials are the method. The philosophy is the method and the materials are part of the environment in which the child can develop, learning on his own. There are materials for all subject areas, including sensorial development and practical life skills. While there are some very specific materials used and sold, there are many, many materials which can be made and Montessori continued observing and had directresses add to their environment ideas that they had which fit in. Montessori made it very clear that one using the materials without the understanding of the philosophy was doing a great disservice to the children.

Ours was a house for children, rather than a real school. We had prepared a place for children where a diffused culture could be assimilated from the environment, without any need for direct instruction. "The Absorbent Mind" |
