St. Paul's School will
be no more after June 2003, because St. Basil's school and St. Paul's
we will forming a new school called the Holy Spirit School.
This is great opportunity for the students to learn about mapping because
have large blue prints of the new school that I show the students that
the contractors have placed in the staff room. We went for a community
walk around the school, and saw the construction site with the men working
with the bobcats, large cranes, plus large signs. This is a great opportunity
for the students to see the development of the new school from the ground
up.
Mapping our classroom and
using the symbols to represent different objects is a good way to involve
the students in an atmosphere that is familiar to all of them. An
easy way to remember the directions is to use the words "Never Eat Shredded
Wheat". We will be drawing a treasure map so that the students can then
follow a map while incorporating the symbols so that other people can locate
the buried treasure.
I asked a volunteer from the
Humane Society to come and speak to the class because her organization
provides a service to the community with protecting and adopting animals.
The students loved the kittens that were brought into the classroom for
the visit. The students asked questions about her volunteering at
the Humane Society, and questions reflected her reason for volunteering
there and what she wore for a uniform.
