Dear Parents:
The students
have been exploring a topic about Communities with Miss Myrna. They
have learned:
-
how to make a simple map
-
what is the difference between
needs and wants/goods and services
-
how a community meets its needs
-
how a community meets the needs
of special groups (handicapped, elderly, teenagers, etc.)
-
how people contribute to their
community
The culminating
event scheduled for Dec. 9 - 12 will be to set up the classroom as a community
and then interact in this pretend community, using what was learned in
math regarding money. The other Grade Two class will also be doing
this activity and we will be visiting each others' communities. Parents
will be invited and we will let you know which day.
Your child
will be choosing a service to offer in the classroom community (dentist,
store, art gallery, etc.). Toward the end of next week, s/he will
be letting you know what s/he has chosen. You can help your child
gather items from home that would help with what s/he has chosen.
Previous years children have brought empty boxes and a toy cash register
for a grocery store, a lab coat and toy doctor kit for a hospital and pretend
food and a homemade oven for a bakery. If you haven't anything, that's
okay, the children will also be making things to use in the community.
At home
you could be sharing stories with your child about your role in the community,
taking your child on a car ride to look at special places in our community
and reading to your child stories from different kinds of communities (large
cities, farm communities, etc.).
Thank you,
Mary Lynn
