BURDEN OF TIME MAYA CALENDAR PROGRAM

Maya Astronomy Home
The Burden of Time is a free ware program designed with two purposes in mind
  • The main screen is a straightforward Maya calendar converter that translates Classical Maya long counts into the Western calendar and vise versa. It is simple, but pretty, with lots of graphics.

  •
  • From the main screen, an "Epigrapher's Tools" option can be put into action. This part of the program isn't as nice to look at, but includes a host of utilities for serious students and epigraphers.

DOWNLOADING THE BURDEN OF TIME

Burden of Time is supplied as a self-extracting  installation file, btsetup.exe. Run this program to install Burden of Time. However, the Mayan fonts included in the package must be separately installed through Windows Control Panel. The program will not run properly until the fonts are installed.

If you have any trouble downloading or installing this program, please e-mail me.  A few users have reported difficulty downloading with certain browsers and down-load programs. I can e-mail the program to you if you encounter this problem. Please read the installation notes

Burden of Time is a Microsoft WINDOWS Program. For MAC users, I recommend trying Chac 1.1.1There does not seem to be a graphic, full featured Linux Maya Calendar Program, but CDAY (available in Linux and Windows formats) calculates dates in several calendar sysyems, including the Maya.

Installation notes

1. The Burden of Time will run under Microsoft WINDOWS 3.x/95/98/XT.  It has not been tested with WINDOWS NT, ME, or 2000, but will likely run under these operating system as well.  At  least 800x600 screen resolution is required to properly display the program. At this resolution, it will run "full screen".  At higher resolutions, it will run in a window.  You can set this resolution in the WINDOWS Control Panel.

2. The Burden of Time uses several special True Type fonts. Three of them, "daysbold, "dayscodicile", and "tun" are copyrighted by Ecological Linguistics, which stipulates that they are to be used only for non-commercial purposes.  An additional font, called "mayan", is freeware by Karen Helene Jensen.  All of these fonts must be installed to run burden of time.  When you install Burden of Time, you will find these fonts in the installation directory.  Install them through Control Panel like any other fonts. Because these are "true type" you can se them in word processors once they are installed.  If you would like the fonts only,  download them here:
TUN-BOLD --- MAYAN --- DAYSBF --- DAYSCB ---DAYSCBI

3. Burden of Time requires a standard WINDOWS  .dll file, VBrun200.dll, to operate.  It is included in the installation directory. Since this .dll is used by many applications, it is likely already  in your WINDOWS/SYSTEM  directory.  If  not, you may wish to copy the file from the installation directory to the system directory.

4. The installer also creates a deinstall program, which can be run to remove Burden of Time from your computer.  The fonts must be removed separately.

KNOWN BUGS

1. Exiting then re-entering "Epigraphers' Tools" without entering a new date sometimes causes errors in new calculations until a new date is entered.

2. Using the "reconstruct date" option when the only missing long count coefficient is the baktun may produce an error. This can be avoided by entering the kin coefficient as an unknown as well.

3. Though not a bug, reporting of BC dates as "minus" dates in Epigraphers' Tools may be misleading. In this program, 3114 BC = -3114, not -3113, the convention often used by astronomers. This is explained in the "notes" in Epigraphers' Tools, but may be overlooked.

4. Despite the on-screen instruction to the contrary, use the day name muluk' rather than muluk when entering tzolk'in dates.

Please report bugs
