So this is Jalene. She is the latest edition to the fleet. Like I said, she looks like a cokewhore, but she's fast, and reliable. Other pics of her (and other things) are here , though you will have to excuse the quality of the pictures of Jalene, as they were taken with my web cam. (It's the only method of digital photography available to me at the moment)

April 9  --  She's been holding up for me like a trooper.  I've burned so many CDR's that my cd burner won't burn a damned thing anymore, and though it doesn't hinder the bootup or windows, when I try to burn a CD, it tries, but gets I/O errors, and sometimes locks up windows entirely .. I don't want another CDR burner for 30 bucks, when I can get a DVD burner for 50, or a dual layer for 90bucks... so I'm gonna take it apart, and build my own laser weapon! ;-)  Well, maybe not a weapon, but perhaps a laser etching tool???  Hey?  Sounds cool?  It'll give me something to try this winter ..

Dad and I are going to be hitting the computer stores today.  I'm either buying his old DVD burner or buying a new one myself.  I may also pick up another Maxtor 120gb SATA 8mb cache drive...  Hard to say right now... I've got the cash, but that money should be spent on the vette right now...

Anyway, she's holding out very well indeed, and still looks awesome, but it's about time for a yearly crash.  There are some serious problems with Symantec 2005, and Norton Ghost 2005.  They don't want to be installed, when the other is present, which is fucking stupid considering they are part of the same Systemworks 2005  package.  I've also seen ALOT of problems with Systemworks 2004 and 2005, not working properly... 2005 wants you to uninstall 2004 before installing 2005.  Well, what the fuck did I pay for this shitty software?  Why the fuck should I have to uninstall anything?  Why the fuck doesn't this goddamned Symantec software do the work itself?  You know Norton utilities back in the 80's and early 90's was the best damned util program out there... And ever since win95 came out, Norton and Symantec software have gone from problematic, to bad to worse to absolute shit as far as I'm concerned.  I'm almost tempted to ditch the damned lot entirely...

<sigh>

December 6 / 2005  --  well, not much news on the pooter front.  Dad gave me his webspace, which I haven't used yet.  He also gave me his DVD burner, which is awesome.  I still haven't picked up another 120gb sata..  She's been having some tcp/ip problems, with regards to leeching on peer to peer networks, such as bittorrent, and bearshare...  Both progs crash randomly, and never seem to download anything large anymore.  I can't just start a download and forget about it, I have to babysit it, and restart when it crashes...  It's totally curbed my TV show and movie watching.  I haven't had the gumption to really fix it either... Being fired from my computer job has left a bad taste in my mouth, and my decision to start a new career as a truck driver, has not helped me get into trying to resolve the problem.  Attempts to fix it by downloading software updates, reinstalling tcp/ip, java, and other assorted quick solutions have all had no positive results.  The progs still crash, in the same way.  I also gave up on Symantec, and Zone alarm has since taken it's place as my security beacon, with admirable results.  Someday I'll get another backup done (actually it will be VERY soon) and I'll format and start all over again.  Maybe that will solve my p2p problems.  if not, I'm sure it will resolve a number of other stupid windows issues, that plague Jalene.  And from there, I'll create a basic ghost image and burn it to dvd, so that I don't have to keep doing it.   She gets above 65celcius on the video card after about 20 mins of playing Doom3 and Farcry, but I refuse to play those games with the graphics toned down, so though it limits gameplay times, my gaming experience is still awesome.  GTA3 still provides hours of enjoyment, and I'm also addicted to Civ3, Moo3, BF1, and several other games...  Being an unemployed guy again, has certainly allowed me to get some serious gaming time in ..

Aside from that, I have no major plans for her.  She is proving herself to me day in day out, and has been worth every penny, and every hour I painstakingly spent putting her together the exact way I wanted her.  She is by far the best PC I've ever had, and though she's just starting to show signs of needing more horsepower for the newer high end games coming out, I am routinely satisfied by the bargain games I get to buy and download..  Hundreds of games have come out since I've had her, and I have many many many yet to play, so I'm not too worried about the new games coming out now...  When I strike it rich, I'll buy a new PC every year, and though Jalene will have new processors and boards, her heart will continue to keep me happy.  Rereading those last couple of paragraphs, I muse to myself, 'too bad she wasn't a woman' ...
