IN MEMORIUM

(from Jeremy) Dick Crum, who taught Balkan folk dances to North Americans since 1951, died at his home December 12, 2005 at the age of 77.  I feel fortunate to have seen him in action for the first time less than 2 months ago at a workshop in Minneapolis. (read a review of this workshop) Many MIFDA members will remember him from this or other workshops or know him by reputation.  He introduced many, many Balkan dances to North America, including many that we have danced at MIFDA.

He was famous for his sense of humour, his knowledge of folk dancing, and his linguistic abilities, among other things.  Many of his sayings and phrases have become a part of folk dance culture and lore, such as “Get your pa-pers here” used to teach a particular rhythm, or his wonderful expression "dance in your shoes” to express a minimalist way of dancing and of feeling the dance.
This is how he described the evolution of a folk dancer:
1. Beginning dancer: Knows nothing.
2. Intermediate dancer: Knows everything, but is too good to dance with beginners.
3. Hotshot dancer: Too good to dance with anyone.
4. Advanced dancer: Dances everything, especially with beginners.
