A17– The Hard Truth About Our Children’s Health
Stephanie Cool
Rm 142

Even though multiple studies have brought issues around inactivity and poor food choices to light over the past decade, our children are still facing an unhealthy childhood. And if the situation doesn’t improve soon, this generation of children – through no fault of their own – will experience a shorter lifespan than their parents. A recent Heart and Stroke Foundation report has found that many teenagers now have atherosclerosis and high blood pressure similar to those found in people in their middle age or beyond.

We are living in a province were only 21 per cent of our youth are meeting international guidelines for physical activity. Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 25 years. Yet, most parents understand that is not a problem they can solve alone. Playing the blame game – blaming children, blaming parents, blaming chools – is not helpful or productive. What will make a difference is when we all make efforts to make it easier for children to be active on a regular basis.

This session introduces simple steps to enhance your schools physical activity levels. Recommendations include a variety of ideas on intramurals, before and after school programs, cross-curricular activities and programs designed to help encourage female participation. You will also gain a better understanding and appreciation of the different types of physical activity opportunities available.

Be a part of the change in creating a healthier generation here in Saskatchewan !

B10–Mind-Mapping Software - An Introduction
George Huczek
Rm 229
1:15 - 3:30
Pre-registration required
Mind-mapping software (also known as concept mapping in educational jargon) allows for the organization of information by placing a main idea or topic in the centre and branching out with related ideas into a networked structure that gets more detailed the further one branches away from the centre. These types of diagrams allow the relationships and connections between ideas to be shown clearly. Most teachers will already be familiar with concept mapping drawings on paper, and likely use these with students. Research has shown that ideas are better conceptualized, understood and remembered using a mind map than by trying to organize those things linearly, in point form. The overall patterns and interrelationships are better connected with a mind map. It is an excellent learning tool.

This session will introduce participants to free, open source software that they can download to use to develop their own mind maps for personal use or with students. This software would be most suitably targeted for high school or middle years learners. The software can also be used for such things as tree diagrams, web-based applications and applets, project management, research, knowledge bases, essay development and creative writing, and for bookmarking and hyperlinking.

Participants will have an opportunity to work with some examples of minds maps for different applications. They will also begin to learn how to develop their own mind maps, where to download the open source files, and how to access help files, a users' guide, and published examples of mind maps.
