2007 - The Gala Huatulco, Huatulco, MX

We chose the Gala Huatulco on the recommendation of a friend from work and we were not disappointed.  The reviews on Trip Advisor are almost all very positive about the Gala.  After having been there, I have to suggest that anyone who could be negative about the resort needs to really decide what exactly it is they expect.  Some folks just have trouble with everything they do in life I suspect.

So, enough on the negative and on with the positives.  This resort provides one of the highest standards of service that we have experienced in the Mexican, DR or Cuban resorts we have stayed in the past.  We are not Four Seasons type people, but we really felt the staff here took things to a level we had not seen before.  We had a couple of mechanical problems in our room...fixed before we could get back to our room later in the morning.  We needed to make change or something similar at the front desk...never had to wait.  Booked al a carte a couple of times...never a wait and always friendly.  Drinks brought right to poolside always with a smile.  On and on it went!  We even got an e-mail when we got home thanking us for staying at The Gala and wishing us well.  Never has this happened before, ever!

The food was fantastic.  The variety, cleanliness and service were excellent.  Often times resorts repeat the same food over and over (Holgin was that way last year), but not the Gala.  There was something new and enjoyable every night.  If you couldn't find something to your liking I'd suggest you stay at home and eat whatever it is you eat that makes you happy.

We had one of the side rooms (partial ocean view) which in my mind was a full ocean view.  The way the balconies are angled I have to think every room had a view of the ocean.  The room was cleaned promptly every day, the bar fridge restocked at least daily.  The staff even comes by to offer a turn down service.

Deb and I are not outgoing people but for some reason, we talked with people every day and got to know people by name, sat down for drinks or breakfast with the same folks on occasion.  I think the resort and the age group of folks has a lot to do with that.  This is not a party-to-you-drop kind of place.  And that's just fine by me.

We went into La Crucecita one day to do some shopping. Its a quaint little town with a nice town square (park) and lots of shops and restaurants and a church surrounding the square.  Before we left we found a great website to provide information on the area

(see http://www.tomzap.com/cruce.html).

We stopped to get out of the sun and have a beer at The Tipsy Blowfish. This is a recently opened restaurant and bar.  The owner, Joe from Houston (never got his last name) was one of most friendly people we have met in our travels and came over to our table, taking a break from some work he was doing, to visit with us for about 1/2 hour.  We understand the story is he and his daughter and their rather big Bull Mastiff dog purchased the place about six weeks prior to our trip.  I think it will be a great success just based on how friendly things felt.

We'll definitely go back to this resort and area very soon, perhaps next year for a couple of weeks.  We did very little this year, but were quite happy.  Next year maybe we'll go exploring, take a boat ride or something.  This year we were quite happy just to stay close to the resort and suck up the great food, drinks, service and everything else The Gala Huatulco had to offer.

We give this resort *****.
