Unfortunately thousands (probably millions) of unsuspecting individuals and businesses have been deceived by what appears to be an appeal for humanitarian aid. Of course, each request for assistance is accompanied by an offer of a huge financial payoff, so a person's willingness to help is exploited by the potential for significant wealth.
As a way to prevent individuals and business personnel from being duped by these scams, we have summarized the latest email letters and provided resources for reporting these scams to authorities who can take appropriate action. This type of email letter is known as the "advance fee letter fraud", "419" scam, or "Nigerian email scam."
Most of these letters emphasize urgency, confidentiality and secrecy. They also typically state that the transaction is 100 percent risk-free and that the sender is hampered in some way from taking action without the help of a foreigner. Spelling and grammar have improved considerably in the latest letters and the use of all caps seems to have ended as well.
Although some individuals have attempted to con the fraud artists as a way of scamming them at their own game and entertaining their friends (see sites listed below), we recommend turning over this responsibility to appropriate authorities. Dealing with these scammers and criminals could be dangerous.
The various letters are listed alphabetically by the sender's last name. This should make it easier to find the letter sent to you in this list. Sometimes the last name has changed from the beginning to the end of the letter.
