My Maunu family ancestors came from Oulu Province, Finland. Great Grandfather Jaakko
Maunu was born May 9, 1847 in the Parish of Lumijoki near Oulu. Great Grandmother Karoliina
Häli was born January 4, 1861 near the village of Kello, Haukipudas
Parish, also near Oulu.
Jaakko and Karoliina were married in Finland
sometime before they emigrated to Minnesota, USA in 1884. Jaakko's
sister Kreeta joined them from Finland in
1886.
The family farmed near Estelline, Hamlin County, SD
where they began their family. The 1900 US
Census indicates that by June 1900 they had moved to a new homestead in
Towner Co., near Rolla, North Dakota.
In 1904 their eldest sons began exploring for homestead land in
the Canadian North West Territories.
They found land near Glenside,
Saskatchewan. Over the next
several years the entire family moved to Saskatchewan.

My Niska family ancestors came from Lappi Province,
Finland.
Grandfather Edward William Niska was born August 10, 1867 in the Parish of Ylitornio near Portimojarvi. He
emigrated to South Dakota,
USA
in 1888.
Grandmother Maria Sophia Kemilä came
from Oulu Province, Finland. She was born
November 1, 1880 and emigrated with her parents, Aaron and Magdaleena (nee Matson) Kemilä
to South Dakota, USA in 1888.
Edward and Maria were married November 6, 1899 in Castlewood,
South Dakota, USA.
The 1900 US Census
indicates that by June 1900 they lived on a homestead in Towner Co., near Rolla, North
Dakota. In 1905 they joined a growing number of
neighbouring Finnish families, including the Jaakko Maunu's, to move to Canada. They
established a homestead near Glenside
Saskatchewan, Canada
where they farmed and expanded their family.
