Someone suggested I put
up the flags from the bird's homelands. Since their
ranges cover several countries, and I'm not really
certain as to their origins, I have them all up lest that
someone might feel offended.

Rojo
gives Consuelo an affectionate little peck on the cheek.
Rojo (pronounced "ro-ho"), a Mitred Conure
(Aratinga Mitrata) is from the east central Andean
foothills, and Consuelo, a Red Throated Conure (Aratinga
Holochlora Rubritorquis) comes from the pine forests of
the Guatemalan or Honduran eastern uplands. They are a
non breeding bonded pair of fourteen year olds who live
with me in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. It should be noted
that both Rojo and Consuelo were mature and unwanted pets
when I found them. Consuelo came to me in 1992 as a
frightened little bird who trembled while clinging to the
side of her cage. Probably captured in the wild as a
chick, she endured the quarantines to arrive at a home
from which she was eventually rejected. The twice
disowned Rojo, also taken from the wild, was an angry
cock who, in 1995, didn't know whether to bite me first
and then take the treat, or to take the treat then bite
me. Ever so slowly their personalities blossomed and they
became my cherished little "Green Piglets".
A few
things have changed since I wrote the above. I acquired a
dwelling substantially larger than the one I had. So,
George the Conure and his humans have come to stay with
me. It's one big happy household.
