Dubois

Native Ancestry of Eugène Pelland and his Descendants

For a long time there has been speculation about possible native ancestry on some branches of the Pellands. Ancestors of Eugene Pelland have a native connection, but it is a long time ago. The person was marie Dubois, also known as Aubois. She herself was a "Métisse", but we don't know her parents name. She lived in Quicnakagan, a native village just outside Port Royal in Nova Scotia, then known as Acadia. She was married to Jean Roy dit Laliberté. Jean Roy dit Laliberté was born in 1648 in Saint-Malo in Brittany, France. He arrived in Acadia in 1670 and there married Marie Aubois, a Micmac (branch of the Algonquins) in 1684.

Marie Dubois was an ancestor of mine nine generations ago, so this makes me about 0.2% or less native. It is strange that some people seemed to feel "ashamed" of having native blood in them and try to hide that fact. On the contrary they should feel proud to be have some ancestry from the true original settlers of this country.

My ancestors leading to Marie Dubois (Aubois) are as following:

  1. Andre Letain
  2. Cecile Desjardins (mother)
  3. Adele Pelland (Cecile's mother)
  4. Eugene Pelland (Adele's father)
  5. Julie Boucher (Eugene's mother)
  6. Michel Boucher (Julie's father)
  7. Marie-Anne Savoie (Michel's Mother)
  8. Marie Comeau dit Grandjean (Marie-Anne Savoie's mother)
  9. Marie Roy dit Laliberté (Marie Comeau dit Grandjean's mother)
  10. Marie Dubois(Aubois)(métisse Micmac)
