A KALEIDOSCOPIC HISTORY OF GOLF IN MANITOBA, CANADA

BY MANITOBA AUTHOR

J. ALAN HACKETT

A 300 PAGE HARD COVER GOLF HISTORY BOOK WITH 244 PHOTOS, PUBLISHED THE FALL OF 1998.

The book transports readers back to the beginning of golf in Manitoba in the 1870s and the interesting characters who packed their mashie niblicks and featheries in Great Britain and brought them across the ocean to teach Manitobans the great Royal and Ancient sport.

Using approximately 250 photos and 100 other visuals, author J. Alan Hackett has captured the history of golf in Manitoba from the first known course constructed with prison labor at Stony Mountain Penitentiary for the warden and his guests, to the golf marathon registered in Ripley's Believe It Or Not in 1928 between Joe Land and Hugh Fletcher that covered 52 miles between Portage la Prairie and Winnipeg, up to the present.

It also tells such stories as how comedian Bob Hope got hooked on golf at one of Winnipeg's courses (thought to be Kildonan Golf Course) in 1930 while performing with the Vaudeville circuit at the Orpheum Theatre. It also features the miniature golf craze of the 30s and fascinating war rules that golf servicemen and women adhered to while overseas in the 40s.

The author is a Winnipeg resident and has been an avid member of the Assiniboine Golf Club since 1962. While compiling the club history in 1982, he discovered the records of many Manitoba clubs had either not been kept, lost in fires or were fading into oblivion. He then started a mission to capture these fast vanishing golf records before they completely disappeared. He has, over the years, amassed the largest Manitoba golf pictorial collection which is now housed in the Manitoba Archives and volumes of newspaper clippings pertaining to golf, many dating back before the turn of the century. This book - 15 years in the making - is the product of all his research.
