Charles Desjardins - Elide Sicotte
Charles ( Pierre) -marié à St-Pierre en 1894 à Elide Sicotte; partis pour Rainy River en 1911
Charles must have been born around 1874, since the St. Pierre records state that he was confirmed on July 12, 1886, at the age of 13. So he would have been 13 anywhere between July 12, 1873 to July 11, 1874. However, since Lucienne was born in April, 1873, there must have been at least a year between his and Lucienne’s birth, so he must have been born sometimes in 1874. .(Wrong? –the 1901 Manitoba Census states he was born on Dec. 28, 1864). It was occasionally stated in the family by possibly grandfather or other more elderly members of the family that Charles Desjardins at the time, owned either the largest or one of the largest fur stores in Montreal, known as Desjardins Furriers.. I believe I had heard that statement from not only grandfather himself, but mother and also Gerard Chenard, the son of Lumina Desjardins and Paul Chenard. It was also common knowledge that Charles Desjardins moved to Florida with his family. One of his sons Ulysse known as Pit (Pit Desjardins) became a world champion diver in 1928. Somehow later on, after all those involved in those statements were deceased, I just couldn’t reconcile owned one of the largest fur stores in Montreal with moving to Florida. If the store was that large, why would someone move to Florida. Was the store sold to someone else. Charles and his family moved to Florida in 1917. Finally I decided to check it out. Searching through the Internet in 1999, I found out that there was still a Desjardins Fourrures store in Montreal, so called the number. Sure enough, the current owner, who incidentally was named Charles Desjardins stated that the store did originally belong to his great grandfather Charles Desjardins. He also stated that his great-grandfather never went to Florida and died in Montreal. He told me to phone his aunt Germaine Versailles if I wanted to know more, so called her and her daughter spoke for her, since Germaine was 87 years old. The issue was real confusing for awhile, since the name of the children of Charles, grandfather’s brother, did not at all match those of the children of Germaine’s grandfather.
