Sarah Mallandaine and Henry Fulcher

Sarah was born in France on 7 August 1844. Following her father's death in St Helier, Jersey in 1853, the family returned to England and settled in Folkestone, Kent. After completing her schooling, Sarah began teaching French at the Abbey School in Bury St Edmonds. It was in Bury that she met her future husband, Henry Fulcher.

Sarah and Henry married on 5 December 1867 at Christchurch in Folkestone. Henry was born abt 1842 in Yaxley, Suffolk. His family had farmed the land around Yaxley for generations. Following their marriage, Sarah and Henry moved to Yaxley and settled on one of the family's dairy farms.

The family appears in the 1881 Census for Suffolk. Henry is listed as being 38 years old and his occupation is a "Farmer of 50 acres, employing 3 men and one boy". Their daughters aged 12, 10 and 6 are listed as scholars. Their son, Thomas, was staying with his grandmother and aunts in Folkestone, Kent at the time of the census

Following their mother's death in 1888, Sarah's sisters Alice and Mary Georgiana moved from Folkestone to Yaxley to live with their sister.



Mary Henrietta Cecilia
: baptised on 13 June 1869 at Yaxley, Suffolk.

Charlotte Georgiana: born on 27 November 1870 in Yaxley. She married George Ashton in Guayquil, Ecuador in 1895.

Thomas: born on 10 April 1872 in Yaxley. He appears in the 1881 Census with his grandmother in Folkestone Kent. He later emigrated to Brazil and was not heard from again.

Alice Mildred: born on 27 September 1874 in Yaxley.
