John William Mallandaine and Elizabeth Walker

John was born in Trichinopoly, India on 5 July 1810. Following his mother's death in 1821, 11 year-old John returned to England with his father and younger brother. While his father returned to India and his career in the East India Company Army, John remained in England with his grandparents. His father sent money home for his care but it does not seem that John saw much of his father over the next 10 years.

John's occupation is variously listed as labourer, bricklayer and oven builder. John and Elizabeth are listed in the 1841 Census living at 9 Pleasant Row, Bethnal Green. Elizabeth is listed as being 35 years old, occupation laundress. They had several children out of wedlock before finally marrying on 4 June 1849. Sadly, only three of their nine children survived infancy.

John is listed in the 1871 Census, living at 10 Ely Place, Mile End. Elizabeth died at age 65 on 18 January 1870. John died soon after the census on 17 July 1871, aged 62 years. He left effects under £200 in his will. His sole executor was Richard Colls, a publican of the Digby Arms, Digby Street.
