John West Mallandaine and Mary Smith
|
In late 1821, John returned to England on leave, with his two sons, following the death of his first wife Maria McCally. He most likely stayed with his parents in Stepney. John married Mary Smith at St John the Baptist in Somersham, Hunts on 27 October 1823.
No record of Mary's birth has been found although we know she was born abt 1796. Family notes indicate that she was from Cambridgeshire. Mary was said to be related to Sir Harry Smith, famous for his actions at the Battle of Aliwal.
On a return voyage to England in 1832, Mary died, near Madras, of asiatic cholera. The family returned to England aboard the "Resource" landing in London on April 1833. John resigned his commission soon after his third marriage and the family never returned to India.
