John West Mallandaine and Maria McCally

John married 15 year-old Maria McCally on 29 March 1808, several years after arriving in India. Maria was the daughter of Robert McCally, a Lieutenant in the 71st regiment, and Catherine Carty. She was born on 17 November 1793 in Cuddalore, India. She was only 17 years old at the birth of her first child.

John and Maria had four children, of which we know at least two survived. Maria died at age 28 in Poonamallee, India on April 21, 1821. Following her death, John returned to England on leave with his two sons.

Following his second marriage to Mary Smith, John returned to India and his career in the East India Company Army. His two sons remained in London and were raised by their grandparents.

John William: born 5 July 1810 at Trichinopoly, India. After returning to England, John married Elizabeth Walker on 4 June 1849 in Bethnal Green.

Eliza Maria: born on 1 September 1812 in Trichinopoly, India. Eliza died at age 18 months and was buried in Trichinopoly on 28 May 1814.

George Robert: born on 30 May 1815 in Trichinopoly, India. George married Jane Galer at St James, Clerkenwell in 1836. He later emigrated to South Africa with four of his five surviving children.

Emily Ann: born on 17 September 1817. There is no record of Emily travelling back to England with her family so it is possible she died in infancy.
