George Robert Mallandaine and Jane Galer
|
George was born on 30 May 1815 in Trichinopoly, India. Following his mother's death in 1821, 6 year-old George returned to England with his father and older brother. He was raised by his grandparents and remained isolated from the children of his father's second and third marriages.
He married Jane Galer in 1836 at St James, Clerkenwell. Jane, daughter of John Henry Galer and his wife Sarah, was christened at St Leonard's, Shoreditch on 14 June 1835. The family appeared in the 1841 Census on Wilmott Street in Bethnal Green and George (listed simply as Robert) was employed as a Carpenter.
For reasons unknown, Jane later "withdrew herself entirely from her husband and his family."
In 1849, George emigrated to South Africa with all of his children except John Elliot who remained in England with his mother's family. George tried his hand at farming in the Byrne Valley in Natal Province but sold his farm soon after and moved to nearby Pietermaritzburg near Durban. In his later years, George moved to Humansdorp and by all accounts became something of a recluse. He became quite religious late in life and acted as lay preacher in the local Anglican Church. He died in 1899 and was buried in the municipal grave yard at Humansdorp.
