Relation on Landa's sire's side.
The Cottage Son Line
There were already two Thoroughbred stallions standing at the State Stud in 1959. On the instruction of the Holsteiner Federation, Helmut Horstmann brought the stallion Cottage Son in England and stationed him at Elmshorn. Cottage Son was 15 years old and already a very successful sire of hunters and 3 day event horses. He had a fabulous pedigree which combined first class racing blood with successful steeplechasing lines. The bloodlines of Trebonius Tb. and Anblick Tb. could instantly nick with Dark Ronald who appears in Cottage Son 's third generation. Cottage Son XX had several offspring in the 1960 Olympic Games 3 Day Event competing for England. His own racing career ended after only one race when he broke down. He was high strung and tough.
In his four years at stud, Cottage Sun produced 14 approved sons and 53 approved broodmares. At first, the breeders groped around in the dark trying to find suitable crosses. This is true of all stallions, especially Thoroughbreds. His least successful crosses were with Heidelberg and Marder Mares. Some of them were too inelastic, others too soft. His best get came from mares who had a great deal of suspension in their trots. Consul was most certainly his best son. He, in turn, produced many good horses; among them GRANAT (twice World Champion, individual gold medal 1978 Olympics and Alternate Olympics 1980 in Grand Prix Dressage), Colombo, Cormwell, an Colibri were other successful approved sons. All there of them were not stationed at the best locations and were removed from the stud too early. Colibri was removed because of his small stature and Consul because of his bits of bad temper which he occasionally passed on. In addition to these three, he produces a succession of useful sires, who in the long run had no impact on the breed. The only stallion who was able to found a line which has lasted was Corporal. It still continues today through his son Capitano to his grandson Capitol.
Cottage Son also sired a whole string of successful jumpers and event horses.
His most significant offspring are the produce of Cottage Son mares crossed with
Ramzes or Ramzes offspring, or the offspring of other Thoroughbred sires. As
witness to this; Ramiro, Rocca, and Lord should be mentioned in particular.
Looking back from today's perspective, it can be clearly seen that Cottage Son's
most important contribution is as a broodmare sire. They are the dams of a great
number of tremendously valuable stallions and high performance horses. This is especially true when Cottage Son appears in the second and third generation.
