Mad Hawk Legend

It was the time of the circle, when all were
to be as one. However,
Father Sun and Brother Moon were fighting. Brother Moon became so mad
that he left. Nanuck, the Creator of all, called all of the animals and
people together. Nanuck wanted someone who was strong and fast. A young
brave was chosen to take a gift to the land of Raven, so that Raven
would go and bring back Brother Moon.
The young brave tied the gift to his waist, and dove into the
great
lake. He rode on the back of Turtle for one full day. When he came to the
land of the mountains, he climbed out of the lake, and said goodbye to
Turtle. At the base of the mountains, he was met by Elk. He climbed onto
Elk's back and rested on its horns. They rode over many hills and valleys
for one day. When they came to the Great Plains, the brave said goodbye to
Elk. The Great Plains were vast and very hot, but the brave ran for mile
after mile, until he came to the land of Raven.
Raven was a strong bird, and dark as night. The brave told
Raven
what Nanuck wished to be. Raven took the gift, spread its wings and
headed to the heavens. The brave returned home. On the third week,
Brother Moon returned. Night and day were as one. Nanuck, to thank the
young brave, granted him one wish. The brave thought long and hard, and
told Nanuck that he wished to be a great bird, so that he could keep peace
between Father Sun and Brother Moon. Nanuck turned the brave into a great
hawk, and that is why to this day, hawks soar between the sun and the moon.
