BERET OF BLUE He is young and strong and time will seem long while he does what he has to do
He was trained to fight But he won't use that right When wearing a beret of Blue
It doesn't make sense On his side of the fence To play a role he did not choose
When out on patrol he must keep control with a gun he cannot use
He is some mothers son and not much can be done Except pray he'll come through
As he does his best To survive the test And bring home his Beret of Blue By Jim MacMillan-Murphy, written in Cyprus

Explanatory note The Korean War was from July 2 1950 to July 27 1953 when the armistice was signed. Those Canadian Soldiers who died in Korea while serving with the United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission, United Nations Korea and Korea 1954-56 are listed below with the names of the other peacekeepers. They died and are buried in the United Nations Cemetery and the Commonwealth War Cemetery in Yokohama, Japan. Major Gower's mortal remains are on a BC mountain - he never made it home from Korea. These early peacekeeper were for the most part - unrecognized until the establishment of Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal of which they are eligible. Please note also these fallen peacekeepers are listed on the Canadian Korean War Honour Roll. |
|
United Nations Service Medal Individuals who were issued this medal for service from 27 June 1950 to 27 July 1953 will not receive the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. The UN Service Medal is the senior UN medal, and was issued to commemorate service in the Korean War, from 27 June 1950 to 27 July 1953. However, although the war ended with the signing of the armistice in P'anmunjom, on 27 July 1953, the UN Service Medal continued to be issued for another year until 27 July 1954. National Defence Headquarters has determined that Korean veterans will be eligible to receive the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal if they served in Korea for 30 days after 27 July 1953, the date the armistice was signed. United Nations Command Military Armistice Commission (UNCMAC) Members of this mission, serving from 27 July 1953, will receive the Canadian Peacekeeping Service Medal. UNCMAC was established after the signing of the armistice in P'anmunjom on 27 July 1953, and continues to operate to this day. Like UNTCOK, no medal was issued for this Commission; however all Canadian Force members of this commission qualify for the Special Service Medal with PEACE Bar. |
