Welcome to the 'Puzzle Solver' page. The Challenger puzzle, the international crossnumber game, appears in many newspapers, usually on the crossword or comics page. It is a syndicated feature of King Features Syndicate, Inc.

Signal Computing Service Ltd. and/or I have no connection with any of the above. This is NOT a commercial venture. Both the 'Puzzle Solver' application and applet are yours to use absolutely FREE.

The compiled versions of the 'Puzzle Solver' are for Windows95 and later. Enjoy!

The 'Puzzle Solver' is a 32 bit C++ program, written with Microsoft's Visual C++, Version 2.0 and MFC 3.0 with some extensions. Version 1.1 of the 'Puzzle Solver' is optimized for faster solutions of some puzzles. After you have tried the program, please send me your impressions of the 'Puzzle Solver'. -Challenger® 'Puzzle Solver' Java Applet

A brief discussion of the pseudo code for and a short explanation of the processes utilized in this JAVA applet are available. Follow this link (click here). This dissertation is probably of interest only to programmers.

• Instructions
  • Use the TAB and SHIFT+TAB keys to move between fields.
  • Type the given values into the four 'hint' and ten 'total' fields.
  • Leave the twelve 'blank' fields with a value of zero ('0').
• Error Messages A "JAVA1.1" capable/enabled browser would display the 'Challenger' Puzzle Solver applet here.
  • Error - Check hints??
    There should be one 'hint' field for each row, column, and diagonal line.
  • Error - Check value??
    The value in the 'total' field is outside of the range of possible values of from 4 to 36.
  • Error - No solution??
    The 'Puzzle Solver' couldn't. Possibly, a value in a 'hint' or 'total' field is wrong.
• Result Codes
  • Black digits indicate the given 'hint' and 'total' fields.
  • Blue digits indicate 'blank' fields which have a unique solution. These values were solved logically.
  • Green digits indicate 'blank' fields which have a unique solution. These values were solved by 'trial and error'.
  • Red digits indicate 'blank' fields which have multiple solutions. These values were determined by 'trial and error'. Use the scroll bar to 'cycle' through all of the possible solutions.
