Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837-1894) was the son of a Belgian music teacher and orchestra conductor. At the age of 18 Louis joined the French military bands and began studying clarinet, saxophone, and conducting through the Paris Conservatory. As a protégé of Adolphe Sax, Mayeur spent many years demonstrating and promoting the saxophone with his virtuoso performances. He is the first saxophonist to be employed by the Paris Opera Orchestra as a permanent member and he remained with that organization for 20 years, doubling on bass clarinet. In addition, Mayeur wrote over 100 compositions for saxophone!
Until now, the only saxophone composition of his still to be found in print was the Grande Fantaisie sur Carnival de Venise, published by Leduc.
The goal of this project is to make available other works of Mayeur either in print or electronic form. Currently the Grande Fantasie sur Norma de Bellini (1869), the Grande Fantasie de Concert sur Rigoletto de Verdi (1877), and the Fantaisie sur la Somnambula de Bellini (1878) are available through this web-site via:
