Leaving all his family 2 CONT behind, he came to the eastern coast of Canada by boat in 1906, eventually 2 CONT arriving in Winnipeg by rail. He worked as a farm labourer at Oak Point, Shoal 2 CONT Lake, finally heading west to the Yorkton district. He applied for a homestead 2 CONT ten miles north of Invermay in 1908, finally getting title in 1913. It appears 2 CONT that he had to lie about his age to get it because he would have only been 19 2 CONT (not 21 like it says on the form). 1 NOTE 1 NOTE After William and Anna were married they returned to Yorkton where Will 2 CONT continued to dig wells. All went well until he had a near mishap while he was 2 CONT down a well to remove a stone; another one dislodged from higher up and 2 CONT narrowly missed him. Another close accident with his hired man, and he decided 2 CONT to pack it upa nd go back to the homestead during the summer of 1918. They 2 CONT lived in a test while getting he logs ready to build a home. Winter came early 2 CONT and the house was not finished so they spent the first winter in a neighbour's 2 CONT shack. The winter of 1918-19 was the year of the bad flu that claimed many 2 CONT lives, but luckily they escaped. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE The next spring, the house was finihshed and the great task of clearing the 2 CONT land began. In time, they developed a mixed farming operation. Anna enjoyed 2 CONT the outdoors and worked long hours helping with the farm chores. Her chickens 2 CONT were well cared for and produced lots of eggs. She took great pride in caring 2 CONT for the animals and working in her large garden. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE As the years went by, and with a family of six, four boys and two girls, the 2 CONT time came to enlarge the house. A kitchen was added as well as a large room 2 CONT upstairs for the four boys. As families do, one by one the children left the 2 CONT security and love they knew at home and begain a life of their own. In 1948, 2 CONT Will and Anna decdied to sell the farm and, with their four youngest, they 2 CONT moved to Vancouver, B.C. A complete change from the farm that was their home 2 CONT for thirty years. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE They were making plans to visit their homeland, but in the midst of all the 2 CONT planning, Will was diagnosed to have cancer. He never did get etter and passed 2 CONT away in May, 1956, without ever having seen the rest of his family since he was 2 CONT seventeen years old. Anna continued to live in the house for awhile, but them 2 CONT made her home with her daughter Ella. The 4 of them 2 CONT settles in Sioux Rapids, Iowa. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Anne Cook just lived walking distance away from the Plans of Thornton which is 2 CONT where James grew up and farmed with his father David. Anne lived at Cossans in 2 CONT an old stone house (see picture) built in the 1700s from the ruins of an old 2 CONT castle (the Lyon family). The Cooks seemed to be fairly well off...moreso than 2 CONT the Smarts. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE After James and Annie were married in 1880, they had 2 children, Annie (born 2 CONT 1880) and David (born 1881). They must have immigrated to Iowa soon afterwards 2 CONT as the next child was born in Iowa in . It seems that other 2 CONT Smarts went to Iowa from Scotland and there are possibly some still living 2 CONT there today. So one day, he said to her"Ellen, have you any 2 CONT objection to change your name to mine?" and she said "No". 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Later, when the boys were grown men, the family moved to a big 640 acre farm in 2 CONT the Dixson District just outside of Dauphin. The people they got the farm from 2 CONT were called the Craigmall brothers. They were from the States. It was a big, 2 CONT five bedroom house with a full-size basement and large kitchen with dumbwaiters 2 CONT (one for food and one for wood). It was lovely in summer, but cold in winter. 2 CONT The windows went up and down on ropes, and when the wind blew, so did the 2 CONT windows! Mel and I lived there from 1928 to 1933. We had three children while 2 CONT we lived there (Ferm, Wilfred and Reta). Wilfred died at two months of 2 CONT pneumonia. 1 NOTE 1 NOTE Mel was farming now with his brother, Earl. They thought that it was time to 2 CONT part because we had a family. In those days, they farmed with 40 horses. We 2 CONT had machinery, cows, sheep and a threshing outfit.
