Mark and I (Rob) have been launching rockets together for about 12 years . My sons Ian and Rick are younger and growing into the sport. Mark ( still no kids... ) has been at it for a lot longer than us have and I would say that I had no exposure to model rocketing before seeing Marks rockets years ago.
It was shortly after that , I found an "America" starter set at a yard sale for $5.00 . It came with everything I needed to put it in the air. The kid I bought it from had glued the motor mount in about a 1/4 inch too far so it needed a little trimming but that was it . The rest of it was untouched and new. Since then the collection has grown . We now have over fifty rockets between the two of us and would have more if not for those darn trees and wicked Squamish winds . BAH...
Living in Squamish makes your launches more of a special event do to the extreme weather we get here (I'm sure some of you with limited launch windows know what I mean). If its not pouring rain , the wind is ripping so you just keep waiting for that 1-2 hour break that you can launch in . Living in the mountains also means working in smaller than prime space . We usually drive out to a somewhat sheltered sand pit in Britannia Beach to launch but they're starting to put up fences now so it gets harder to get in each year. When you get a good high launch, the wind will catch your rocket as it crests the shielding ridge and you get to run the length of the pit to catch it (we now have a mini bike recovery team).
We hope you will enjoy and be able to use any information you find on this site. With any luck, you will find many wide open places just itching to be known as "Good Launch Sites".
