Red Bull Flugtag 2006
Red Bull Flugtag rolled into Vancouver for the first time ever. There were teams from across Canada as well as a couple from the US. The object of the competition - build a flying machine within certain dimensions and under a certain weight and see how far it can fly. Teams had pushers and a pilot and also a pre-flight performance. It certainly was quite a production!
Welcome to Flugtag, baby!

In the hangar area, you were able to go and see all the flugtags and their teams. Here are few choice flugtags...and some of their demises into False Creek.
Grease Lightning? No, this as Grease Flightening.

This will strike a chord with anyone who rides Vancouver transit regularly - the B-line accordion bus, bike rack and all. This was The Flying 99 B-Line flugtag.

Team Air Hockey.

The pilot sat in the boot of the skate and nose-dived off the end of the pier.

Back to the Flugtag. Cool!

Looks like they didn't make it up to sufficient speed. Doc, Marty and co. jumped into False Creek anyway.

General-Lee Airborne. Naturally, the team had Daisy Duke, Bo & Luke Duke and Boss Hog! Gotta love those Dukes of Hazzard.

A giant sushi roll. I think it's a dynamite roll. Team Sushi Gone Wild also dressed up as various sushi pieces, including a giant blob of wasabi.

Sushi was never meant to fly...

The Last Saskatchewan Elevator doesn't look like much, but it was actually quite an entertaining show. To the left there are the gophers and their enemy, the farmer, who proceeded to shoot the gophers before they shoved him off the pier. The grain elevator actually split into two parts and released yellow & green balloons from within.

Pirates seem to a very popular theme this year.

And the question everyone wants to know the answer to - does poutine really fly?

Doesn't look like it!

The mysterious Egg Man. In the hangar, you could listen to try and figure out what was inside the egg. At launch time - out jumped a guy in a chicken suit!
