The husband of Lucy Newby of 88 Halifax Road, Greenside, Sheffield.
He was a civilian aboard the SS Ceramic which was sailing from Liverpool to Australia. He died between the 6th and 7th December 1942 in the Atlantic Ocean west of the Azores, when the SS Ceramic was sunk by Submarine U-515. He was one of 655 passengers and crew who died, the sole survivor being Eric Munday a Sapper with the Royal Engineers who was rescued by the U-Boat and subsequently became a Prisoner of War.
