HISTORY OF LEONIDIO |
|
In the past, (late 1800's- early 1900's) Leonidion was a bustling sea port town, where much trade occurred. The main form of transportation to get from city to city was by ferry. The roads were too poor for many vehicles to drive through. Now the port plays host to a provincial Nautical/Swimming competition in the summer, every four years. The most recent competition was held in July 2002. Many yachts and cruisers from all over the world make Leonidion a main point of destination. The port from June to September is filled by a variety of both classic and modern yachts. Anyone with the slightest interest in yachting would get pleasure in just observing the boats docked at Plaka.
