GEDDirect is a handy utility to take a GED file and generate web pages for a selected individual’s Direct ancestors and their children. This is a great way to show off your lineage without having to put your entire file on the internet.
All you need to do to create your web pages is select your GED file, select your output directory, select the primary individual and then click “Build”.
Once the “Build” is completed click on “Display” and your newly created pedigree chart will be displayed. Click on any of the names and the appropriate “Family Group” page will be displayed showing details on the couple, their children and the names of their parents.

Visit
my web site at www.arnett.ca to see GEDDirect in action.

This flag controls whether or not the vitals statistics for living individuals will be displayed. Living individuals are defined as those with a blank death date born after 1900. If the field is checked, the vital statistics (birth/marriage date & location) for living individuals will not display on any of the pages.
This number restricts the number of generations that will be processed, therefore the pedigree chart will be smaller and the number of family group pages will be less. You may want to use this if you have a few extremely long lines that make the resulting pedigree chart overly wide.
When the pedigree chart is created each new generation is indented to allow you to see the generations easily. Depending on the number of generations you want to show or your personal preference you can adjust this indent amount by changing this number. The indent amount is measured in characters.
When the family group pages are created there is a number on the far right beside the spouses’ names that indicate the Ahnentafel number as related to the Primary Individual. I some case you may want to produce pages for a Primary Individual that you do not want to be #1. This field allows you to set the starting Ahnentafel for the Primary Individual to any number.
This is the location of a .gif or .jpg image that you want to display as the background of your generated pages. Clicking the “Find” button allows you to select your .gif or .jpg image from where ever it resides on your computer.
If you do not want to have an image or you image has transparent features you can set the background colour here. This field will accept either valid colour names (ie. lightblue) or hex values (ie. #669966).
Enter some text or valid HTML or the name and location of a file that contains information that you would like displayed at the top of all your generated pages. Use the “Find” button to select a file from you computer.
Enter some text or valid HTML or the name and location of a file that contains information that you would like displayed at the bottom of all your generated pages. Use the “Find” button to select a file from you computer.
This is the name of the individual that the pedigree chart will begin with if “Build” was clicked now. Once an individual is selected their details will be displayed here.
This is a list of all the individuals in your GEDCOM file. Click on any individual to make them the primary individual and their details will be displayed in the “Primary Individual” section above.
Use this field to quickly move to an individual in the list. Enter the last name, then a comma and finally the first name if you need to go to that much detail.
Once you’ve
chosen a GEDCOM file, an output directory and a primary individual clicking on
the “Build” button will create the pedigree chart and the associated family
group pages. They will be stored in the specified “Output Dir”. Watch the
status line at the bottom of the screen to see how your build is progressing.
Clicking on this button will display the latest generated pedigree chart in your default browser. From the pedigree chart you will be able to click on links that will display the appropriate Family group page.
Clicking this button will close GEDDirect and save all your values for next time.
Now that you have built your web pages you’ll want to show them to the world. Use any FTP program (I find that WS_FTP works great) to move the entire “Output” folder up to your site. Add a link to the name of the pedigree file and you are done.
