The sawdust firing technique is derived from the traditional Southwest way of burninshing and pit firing pottery.
The burnished piece is laid unglazed in a bed of sawdust in a pit. A variety of chemicals and organic materials are
laid with the pots and the pit is stacked with firewood. It burns for 24 hours till there is nothing but charred looking
pots in a bed of ashes. The pots are removed from the ashes, cleaned and polished with paste wax. The effects are
striking resulting in smoky swirls of rusts and purples which give a feeling of emerging planets and exploding stars.
The ultimate surrender of control after carefully orchestrating a set of possibilities always gives the pot the opportunity
to be a little bit better than the potter.

Pit Fired pots are for decorative use only.

The process kiln loaded and then lit off burns from the top down! Amazing amount of work ... total surrender to the fire and flame.
