Lakefield Grand Trunk Station as it appeared in the 1970's

Lakefield Grand Trunk Station, thought to be built in 1882 defies the logic of the Village council minutes which tendered for drainage in this area and a government wharf in 1890 to be built in time for the fall visit of the Governor General and Lady Stanley.
The 1970's 'track stops' are deceiving. The tracks ran down to the government wharf with cross-over switches and a passing track. A single line ran into what is now Isobel Morris Park where the McManus sawmill operated.
The pier for the first turntable remains visible in the parking lot of Lakefield Hydro on Nicholls street, south of the station. This turntable remained to the end as the station turntable sank regularly in the spring months.
The station is being lovingly restored and now sits on a cement block foundation, as the original oak flooring rotted from being on the ground.Contributed by: Jackson County Historical Society H.E. "Ed" Carlson.
