A Class 1 road test may only be taken if you are 18 years or older and hold a valid Alberta Class 5 license.  Additionally, before you take your road test, you are required to pass a Class 1 knowledge test, successfully complete a vision screening test, obtain a satisfactory medical report, and have proof of qualification to hold an air brake endorsement.  Your knowledge test and vision screening test may be completed at any Alberta Registry Agent office.

For your road test you must provide a tractor/trailer combination with three or more axles, where the trailer is equipped with a full air brake system.

The road test is a two part timed test.  The complete test takes approximately 1 1/2 hours.  Part 1 includes a vehicle pre-trip inspection, a trailer uncouple and couple, and an air brake pre-trip inspection.  Part 2 of the test is the driving portion.  The examiner will explain the test procedures and you will be given the opportunity to ask questions about the test.  If you fail Part 1 of the test, Part 2 will not be continued.  You may take the test again as early as the next day.
