Cooling Tower Systems

Corrosion, Scaling, Deposition and Microbiological Fouling

All four problems are associated with these systems. Corrosion, Scaling, Mineral Deposition and Microbiological Fouling.

Corrosion is best dealt with chemical inhibitors which pacifies the piping and protects the metal surfaces.

Scaling poses a number of problems which include the loss of heat transfer, resistance to flow, poor distribution (blockage of piping) and treatment absorption. This is controlled with proper bleed-off and inhibitor blends.

Mineral deposition will lead to blockages or poor distribution through piping. This is also controlled with proper bleed-off and inhibitor blends.

Microbiological Fouling will turn a cooling tower system septic and will reduce water flow, evaporative efficiency, promote corrosion and in some cases, sources of infection (legionnaire's disease).

- Algae will grow in either direct or indirect sunlight, cooling tower efficiency can drop off by as much as 50 percent.
- Bacterial slimes or bio films as they are commonly referred to slime up the inside of the exchanger/condenser tubes significantly reducing a chillers performance and this also promotes corrosion under this bio film.

- Fungi can cause microbiological problems ranging from wood rot in wooden cooling towers to fungal bio films in condensers.
