About Marimbas... |
||
Marimbas are xylophone-like instruments made with wooden keys. They are often made with a rich red African hardwood called Padauk. Other woods such as Mahogany, Wenge, even Yew or Cedar are sometimes used. Kwayedza members have built most of the instruments that we play on! There are 4 different ranges of marimbas - soprano, tenor, baritone and bass - each playing its own part and rhythm. A typical large marimba band will play on three sopranos, two tenors, and one each of the bass and baritone marimbas. Hosho (gourd shakers) are commonly played as well to hold the rhythm. Occasionally hand drum or even western instruments are played to accompany the marimbas and hosho. Whatever the mix, the result is a unique lively music that appeals to people of all ages. |
