In Runebound: Midnight, one person plays the character of the Night King, a powerful entity who opposes the other players and tries to prevent them from accomplishing their goals. Sound familiar? I just took the idea of individual Night Kings and created them as Overlords to use in Descent.

The OL may influence creatures who may or may not be favored minions as well. He does this by rolling power dice equal to the number of players and consulting the traits at the top of his card. This is done when new areas are revealed and affects all creatures in that area as well as any spawns that occur. The Melee, Ranged and Magic values work the following way, I'll use Zardrix as an example:
 
 
 - choose one area you (as OL) wish to influence [I'll choose Ranged]
 - roll power dice equal to the number of players [4]
 - for every matching die face, the creatures gain power [I rolled 2 enhancements]
 
 1 match: +1 life
 2 match: +1 life, +1 armor (in the matching trait)
 3 match: +1 life, +1 armor, +1 power die (in the matching trait)
 4 match: +1 life, +1 armor, +1 power die, +1 power usually reserved for favored minions
 

So, all creatures I controlled in the area would have +1 life and +1 armor in the Ranged trait. Favored minions, Shadowspawn, would also gain powers according to Zardrix's power level. Red creatures roll for influence in each attribute.

'Minor Patrol' replaces the 6, 4 cost, spawn cards.
'Major Patrol' replaces the 3, 5 cost, spawn cards.
'Midnight Hordes' replaces the 2 'Hordes of the Things' power.
'The Threat Grows' replaces the 'Brilliant Commander' power.
