Artist Statement
One can say that the range of my work encompasses both functional
and sculptural ceramics. Over the years I have demonstrated
this by trying to challenge the medium of clay by using whatever
techniques which warrant the design I have in mind. Sometimes
my vessels are cast, sometimes they are thrown on the wheel
and other times they are handbuilt or incorporate various
technical strategies. I also like to use familiar objects
and used them in unusual ways, thereby transforming their
function into sculptures. They also bring the viewer and maker
closer together. Pattern, shape and colour are the three most
important elements in my work. Each however separate is interrelated
and balanced and hopefully produces a sense of harmony. All
of this is used as my vehicle for artistic expression.
Many of the decorative elements used in my ceramics can be
traced to my Japanese heritage. Yet in Japan it is not viewed
as traditional but influenced by my adopted country, Canada.
Perhaps it is my fondness of surprise that has moved me towards
using some elements which are not truly Japanese or Canadian.
