Budo Biography             Donald Shapland

 

Began Judo as a young child in post war Ontario Canada circa 1954

Joined first organized Karate dojo in Detroit Michigan 1966 Sensei Doug Noxon and Willie Adams

Began teaching Isshinryu Okinawan Karate at Windsor YMCA 1968

1969 visited Okinawa, met Shimabukuro Tatsuo and trained there for one month

1971 established Karate dojo in Dryden Ontario

1973 established Karate dojo in Winnipeg Manitoba

Returned to Okinawa with a group of US Sensei to the Agena dojo one month

Began to contract to the RCMP as arrest, control and Handcuffing instructor 1975

1975 established dojo at Confederation College Thunder Bay, Ontario

1979 established dojo in Mission BC

1981 established dojo in Abbotsford BC

1983 began training in Jujutsu under Professor Wally Jay

Contracted to the Federal Correctional Staff training College as Arrest, Control and handcuffing instructor

1983 began training in Arnis under Professor Remy Presas

1985 established dojo in Hope BC

1990 went to reside in Naha, Okinawa began Ryukyu Kobudo at the Akamine Eisuke Hozon Shinko Kai hombu dojo in Tomigusuku

1994 began studying under Tamayose Hidemi (Hanshi Kudan) Sensei in Ozato village

1994 began to accompany Tamayose Sensei translating and teaching Ryukyu Kobudo seminars in North America and Europe

1995 May 25 married Okinawan wife Yamakawa Norie

1999 following the death of Akamine Sensei, assisted Tamayose Sensei in forming the Tesshinkan

2001 returned to Vancouver Canada and began teaching Ryukyu Kobudo
