Spinal Muscular Atrophy 

A little known neuromuscular disease that changed my life when a little boy with SMA (Type I) named Cole captured my heart.  SMA is a genetically inherited disease which effects the muscles to varying degrees.  There are four main types of SMA.  Type I being the most severe and usually diagnosed prior to 3-6 months of age. Type IV being the least severe, and almost always diagnosed in adulthood.

 Hearing loss, ASL, Deaf Culture

I was born with Profound hearing loss on my right side, and have mild/moderate fluctuating loss on my left.  I hope to share my experiences as a hard of hearing person,  provide information, links, and hopefully dispel some myths regarding hearing loss.  Whether you've grown up with hearing loss, have recently acquired it, or are a hearing person who knows someone with hearing loss there will be something here for you.  Please check out my  Deaf & Hard of Hearing  section for more information.

Please join us at 8:00 p.m. on August 12, 2006, for the Third Annual Nationwide SMA Candle Lighting Event. August is SMA Awareness month, and as such, we choose to use the 2nd Saturday in August every year as a time to reflect on those lost, as well as to honor those living daily with SMA. As this event continues to grow, we hope to bring awareness to the public about the disorder as well as unity to the families living with it, as we all join to spread the light of our candles around the world. We hope you will join us.
